An overeager legal strategy may endanger Trump’s energy goals

Roll Call | April 04, 2019

Sen. Lisa Murkowski was unhappy with an April 5 ruling by Sharon Gleason, a federal judge in Anchorage, Alaska, who found that President Donald Trump had unlawfully lifted a ban prohibiting drilling in the Arctic Ocean, dealing the president’s fossil-fuel energy agenda a major blow. “I strongly disagree with this ruling,” said Murkowski, who wants to open her state’s land and water to increased oil and gas leasing. “I expect this decision to be appealed and ultimately overturned.” If the past is any indication, the Alaska Republican may be disappointed. In the 28 months since Trump became president, his administration has worked with zeal and speed to slash, dilute and tweak the environmental protections of previous administrations, frequently with the support of Republicans in Congress and industry groups that stood to gain.

Tanium Achieves StateRAMP Authorization

Businesswire | May 12, 2023

Tanium, the industry’s only provider of converged endpoint management (XEM), today announced that Tanium Cloud for U.S. Government (TC-USG) is now authorized for the State Risk and Authorized Management Program (StateRAMP). StateRAMP was founded in 2020 from the need to provide a uniform approach to verifying that cloud services providers met the established standards and regulations required to do business with state and local governments. As a registered 501(c)(6) organization, StateRAMP is committed to making the digital landscape a safer and more secure place. Tanium’s own StateRAMP certification marks the company’s continued investment in providing state and local government departments greater certainty around IT and security systems tasked with safeguarding constituent services, sensitive information, assets, and work sites. By consolidating point-solution capabilities into a single platform delivered via the cloud, TC-USG will enable agencies to mitigate risks from cyberattacks and ensuing data breaches while reducing complexity and cost across many environments. “We have long been focused on strengthening cybersecurity and IT oversight for our state, local, and education organizations here at Tanium,” said Jennifer Axt, vice president of the U.S. SLED practice at Tanium. “StateRAMP authorization is the latest milestone confirming Tanium as the vendor of choice for visibility, control, and remediation across IT and security stacks for government teams so they can focus on what matters most: serving constituents and educating students.” Recent regulations and requirements have placed an emphasis on government organizations to retire outdated hardware and software, creating a need to leverage cloud technology and embrace digital transformation. TC-USG delivers the complete functionality of the Tanium XEM platform as a fully managed, cloud-based service, enabling state and local entities to use the power of XEM with no additional infrastructure. The single Tanium agent deployed on the endpoints and managed via the cloud platform converges multiple point solutions spanning asset discovery and inventory, endpoint management, certificate management, unified policy configuration, digital employee experience, risk, compliance, and incident response. These solutions, with built-in automation, will enable agencies to improve their security posture, ensure compliance, reduce complexity, decrease costs, and improve efficiency and collaboration among IT, risk, and security teams. “As a former deputy state CIO, I understand the constant threat of cyberattack that our state IT leaders face,” said Chris Cruz, Tanium’s public sector CIO. “With states leaning more heavily toward cloud-enabled service offerings, and even requiring it for new software procurements, solutions like the Tanium XEM platform are critical to mitigate risk in real time and achieve complete endpoint visibility across increasingly complex IT landscapes. With StateRAMP, we’re able to continue supporting local and statewide agencies with a level of security designed to combat today’s threats.” Tanium was granted StateRAMP authorized status after successfully completing all security and system validations set by program administrators. The company currently supports more than 20 U.S. states in their goals of achieving a holistic, real-time view across their IT landscape including the state of Arizona, Tanium’s StateRAMP sponsor, whose Department of Homeland Security selected Tanium XEM for the state’s award-winning cyber readiness program. Tanium has also been an active leader in the whole-of-state (WoS) movement and continues to offer best practices, guidance, and consolidated tools for other states pursuing similar approaches to cybersecurity and IT management. By validating state and local agencies’ cyber posture with unparalleled visibility of all hardware and software assets, risk dashboards, role-based access controls, and a source of truth for asset data across multiple department levels, the Tanium XEM platform supports a WoS security strategy. About Tanium Tanium, the industry’s only provider of converged endpoint management (XEM), is the reference platform of choice to manage complex security and technology environments. Only Tanium protects every endpoint from cyber threats by integrating workflows across IT, Risk, Compliance, and Security into a single platform that delivers comprehensive visibility across devices, a unified set of controls, real-time remediation, and a common taxonomy for a single shared purpose: to protect critical information and infrastructure at scale. Tanium has been named to the Forbes Cloud 100 list for seven consecutive years and ranks for the second consecutive year on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For. In fact, more than half of the Fortune 100 and the U.S. Armed Forces trust Tanium to protect people; defend data; secure systems; and see and control every endpoint, team, and workflow everywhere.

Esri Joins Partnership to Help Local Governments Use Mapping Technology to Tackle Equity Issues

Businesswire | May 11, 2023

Governments and businesses worldwide are increasingly prioritizing equity through their policies and practices. To implement these policies, organizations must understand that equity challenges are fundamentally a geographic issue. To support these efforts, Esri, the world leader in location intelligence, has joined a partnership to create the Chief Equity Officer Network. Along with the Harvard School of Public Policy, the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties (NACo), and Bloomberg Philanthropies, the network's mission is to find solutions that make equity strategic and actionable by using geographic information system (GIS) technology as a foundation. "Equity is about creating thriving communities for all residents," said Sophia Garcia, Esri equity and civic nonprofit organizations industry specialist. "To do so, organizations need to implement solutions that meet the needs of the underserved and unserved, whether those conditions stem from racism, variations in physical or mental health, lack of access to services, the effects of climate change, or other circumstances. GIS provides the unique ability to map these complex problems, understand the data, and take more effective action to solve them. We are proud to be able to contribute to this partnership." A key partner in creating the network, NACo is an organization that unites county officials to advocate for county government priorities in federal policy making. NACo also promotes exemplary county policies and practices, including those around equity. "We are thrilled to collaborate with Esri and are thankful for them bringing their expertise on how GIS is applied to equity across our nation's communities," said Teryn Zmuda, NACo chief research officer and chief economist. "GIS provides the geographic lens for local leaders to translate data, which can be used to approach, discuss, and address equity issues within and across jurisdictions." The Chief Equity Officer Network will bring together equity officers and leaders from across the states to cultivate and nurture ideas to address equity and how it applies to their community's needs. About Esri Esri, the global market leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, location intelligence, and mapping, helps customers unlock the full potential of data to improve operational and business results. Founded in 1969 in Redlands, California, USA, Esri software is deployed in hundreds of thousands of organizations globally, including Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, nonprofit institutions, and universities. Zetron to Deliver Cyber Resilience Assessments and Roadmaps to Kansas PSAPs

Zetron | March 15, 2023

On March 14, 2023, Zetron, one of the leading communications technology and service providers, announced it has received a contract from the North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) of Kansas (USA). The contract offers cyber resilience roadmaps and assessments for the Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) of 34 counties throughout the states. As the fiscal agent for six of the seven Homeland Security regions in Kansas, the Homeland Security/Emergency Operations unit of the Kansas Highway Patrol applies for and administers Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP) funding to subrecipients such as the NCRPC. State and local governments, including fire departments, police, and other public safety agencies, are increasingly susceptible to cyberattacks. As per the Verizon 2022 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR), the public sector had the second-most cybersecurity incidents and the fourth-most data breaches among major industries in 2018. In addition, a 2021 Fastly report found that of all cybersecurity alerts, 45 percent are false positives that can be frequently difficult to distinguish from genuine threats and malicious behavior. This results in getting valuable time wasted during an emergency. Zetron, with SecuLore Solutions, a cybersecurity partner and local services partners, will finish cybersecurity assessments and roadmaps of selected thirty-four counties across Kansas, with its population from 600,000 to less than 1300 people. Each counties' assessment will identify threats and provide prioritized, actionable recommendations for remediating vulnerabilities and enhancing the county's cybersecurity risk posture. Following the contract terms, cybersecurity assessments and road maps for Kansas counties selected by NCRPC Regional Project Managers and the Planning Team will be completed in multiple phases through March 2024. About Zetron Zetron is one of the leaders in mission-critical communications technology worldwide. The company offers integrated solutions with exceptional reliability and support. It was founded in 1980 with decades of experience serving the public and private sectors and a sterling reputation for superior quality and dependability. Based in Redmond, Washington, it has customers across all seven continents and in a variety of industries such as transportation, public safety, utilities, the federal government, natural resources and more. In addition, it delivers purpose-built solutions to be always available wherever mission-critical communications must be uninterrupted.
