Trump Administration Threatens to Make Employees Work Without Pay Over Border Funding Shortfall

Government Executive | June 27, 2019

The Trump administration is threatening to force federal employees to work without pay if Congress fails to act quickly in providing an emergency funding boost for operations on the southern border, saying the office in charge of housing migrant children is on the verge of running out of funds. The Health and Human Services Department’s Office of Refugee Resettlement will soon run out of funding for its unaccompanied children program, the agency has warned, forcing it to operate as if a government shutdown were in place. The administration has also cautioned that it could cut off funding for contract shelters where the children are held.

Although it is a complicated problem that requires a multifaceted approach to solve, according to Gordon Brock, Director of the Local Government Engineers Association, part of the issue lies in the lack of a defined career path. "People are looking for well-defined, well-remunerated career paths; not just jobs. They don’t just want to be an asset engineer, they want to see continual development. Will [Barton] is a rare breed these days; Directors of Engineering are not as common as they used to be across the industry." Young IPWEA Chair and Director of Engineering at Junee Shire Council Will Barton agreed.

IGEN Networks Corporation secures GSA Multiple Award Schedule Contract with State and Federal Governments

IGEN Networks Corporation | December 03, 2021

IGEN Networks Corporation a leading innovator of cloud-based and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions for the protection and management of mobile assets, today announced its qualification for GSA Multiple Award Schedule Contract with selected states and federal government markets. The GSA/VA status enables IGEN to market its products and services directly to governments including Counties, States, and the Federal Government. The GSA/VA Schedule contract status is a Preferred Vendor Status with local, state, and federal governments from which qualified companies are considered to be responsible and reputable to these governments. According to the GSA/VA Solicitation Services, there are only .003% of companies in the United States that are GSA or VA Federal Supply Schedule Contract qualified. According to The Authority in Government Contracts the Federal Government spends over $40B exclusively with GSA/VA Schedule Contract holders on an annual basis. From this GSA/VA Schedule contract status, IGEN will market its Medallion GPS Fleet Platform initially to Counties located in six states that include Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York City, New York, Tennessee, and California. Additional states will be added to IGEN's contract status as opportunities grow across the US. The Medallion GPS Fleet Platform will offer compelling features and services at lower costs with emphasis on ease-of-use. The system is organized around both asset and driver with dispatch capabilities, automated reporting, maintenance, diagnostics reporting, driver behavior scoring, and video tutorials on demand that are built on AWS Cloud-based infrastructure. The Medallion GPS Fleet Platform incorporates the patented "Digital Telematics Signature", which offers greater accuracy in measuring and scoring driver behavior across diverse fleets providing a powerful tool for assessing actuarial risk of assets and their drivers. "Combined with our GSA/VA contract status, we now have the process to facilitate transactions with the Counties across all US government markets. In preparation we have increased our inventory levels to 2500 hardware activation units for the next quartile period. The diversity of government assets along with the self-insurance of these assets creates an excellent fit with the capabilities of our Medallion GPS Fleet Platform." Neil G Chan, CEO of IGEN Networks Corp About IGEN Networks Corporation IGEN Networks Corporation provides peace-of-mind to automotive consumers and their families through direct access to Internet-of-Things (IoT) cloud-based services that include Stolen Vehicle Protection, Real-time updates on asset health and Driver Behavior. Terrestrial Energy Awarded US Government Grant for IMSR Development

Terrestrial Energy | November 26, 2021

Terrestrial Energy USA was awarded a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support licensing and commercialization of its Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR), a Generation IV nuclear power plant. The largest of the DOE awards announced Nov. 18, the award supports modeling and simulation for the off-gas systems of the IMSR power plant, supporting the company’s regulatory program for U.S. NRC licensing. “Advanced reactors will completely change the way we engineer, build, and operate nuclear reactors,” said Dr. Kathryn Huff, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, in a press release announcing the awards. “These awards support technical and regulatory strides necessary for commercializing new carbon-free nuclear technologies poised to help our nation reach net-zero emissions by 2050.” Terrestrial Energy is developing its IMSR Generation IV small modular reactor (SMR) power plant for commercial deployment in the late 2020s and is engaged with regulators in the United States and Canada. The Generation IV molten salt technology used by the IMSR power plant delivers a 50 percent increase in the thermal efficiency of electric power generation compared to power plants that use conventional – water-moderated-water-cooled –reactor technology. This provides a step-change improvement in the economics of nuclear power generation while preserving nuclear energy’s carbon-free and resiliency advantages over other energy sources. “We value this grant and the Department of Energy’s support as we work to license and commercialize the IMSR nuclear power plant in the United States. It is encouraging that DOE sees the potential of Generation IV technologies and the IMSR. These grant programs support private companies as they work to deliver nuclear power technologies that can succeed in competitive global energy markets and deliver global net-zero goals. Technologies such as our IMSR Generation IV nuclear plants will produce reliable, cost-competitive heat and power without emissions, making them uniquely capable of competing with fossil fuels.” Terrestrial Energy USA CEO Simon Irish About Terrestrial Energy USA Terrestrial Energy USA, based in Charlotte, NC, is developing the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) for U.S. market deployment. The IMSR is a non-Light Water Reactor that uses Generation IV technology to generate electricity 50 percent more efficiently than conventional – water-moderated-water-cooled – nuclear reactor technology. The IMSR represents a step-change improvement in economics, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants that is possible only with Generation IV technology. IMSR power plants will provide resilient, reliable, dispatchable, zero-carbon and cost-competitive electric power, as well as high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis, hydrogen production and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. IMSR power plants have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth.
