Polk's From Poverty to Promise: A Simulation event on February 24, 2016, was designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by people living in a limited resource situation. This experience may not always reflect the lives of these families nor is it comprehensive, but a glimpse into some of the real life issues faced. The goal of this one-day event is to understand poverty in Polk County and stimulate a cohesive and unified approach to alleviate poverty-related issues; for example, connecting city planners to healthcare professionals, or social service agencies with businesses. The planning group for this event consists of members from the United Way of Central Florida, Polk Vision, Florida Department of Health in Polk County, Board of County Commissioners Indigent Health Care Division, Board of County Commissioners Social Services Division, Heartland for Children, Healthy Start Coalition, Central Florida Health Care, and UF/IFAS Extension Polk County.
