Milestone on Lean Six Sigma Training: Over 1,000 City of Houston Employees Trained

September 8, 2014

In December 2012, the City of Houston embarked on a journey of continuous improvement by creating a Lean Six Sigma program to train employees and improve City performance. Lean Six Sigma is a process improvement methodology typically used in the manufacturing sector to deliver high quality goods or service as efficiently as possible. The goal is simple: combine Six Sigma's focus on eliminating defects with Lean's focus on continuous flow, voice of the customer, and continuous improvement in order to make business processes better, faster, and cheaper. Lean Six Sigma in the public sector is by no means new - in fact, the City’s program drew inspiration from the State of Ohio's LeanOhio, the Environmental Protection Agency's Lean program, and even our fellow Texans in the City of Irving. You can learn more about Lean Six Sigma and Lean processes in government at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean_Government. The City's Lean Six Sigma program started small with a dozen employees participating in a free training seminar. Encouraged by the results, the Finance, General Services, and Fleet Management Departments partnered with the University of Houston's College of Technology to provide a comprehensive two week Black Belt Training regime to these same employees. As the benefits of the program became evident, the Finance Department's Performance Improvement Division developed training materials and engaged departments to identify potential projects. By the end of August 2014, the City has trained over 1,000 employees and completed many significant projects resulting in greater efficiencies and improved customer service.
