The Most And Least Understood U.S. Government Agencies

Do Americans understand what their federal agencies actually do? The Harris HRS +0.00% Poll analyzed some of the most visible government agencies to find out and some of their results can be seen in the following infographic. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stands out at the very top of the list with 92 percent of respondents indicating they understand what the agency is and does. The FBI and IRS also scored highly in terms of public understanding – 90 percent each. The National Institutes of Health or NIH is the main agency responsible for biomedical and health-related research but it is at the very opposite end of the spectrum of understanding. Just over half of the American public are aware of what the NIH is and does.
