To keep pace with today’s dynamic and increasingly sophisticated cyber threat environment, State and Local governments must take decisive steps to modernize their approach to cybersecurity, adopting security best practices. The federal government has launched a first-of-its-kind cybersecurity grant program specifically for state, local, and territorial governments across the country.

The demand for integrated, easy-to-access government services has never been higher. While state and local governments have strived to meet this growing demand, agency silos continue to make the goal of a common and intuitive digital government experience difficult to achieve.

State and local governments are tasked with securely connecting one or multiple of five things to support mission-critical needs: People, locations, data, clouds and applications. With a renewed focus on government cybersecurity, agencies face increased pressure to keep those connections secure. There’s growing attention to the physical security of government data centers and an increase in the adoption of cloud strategies that explore vendor-neutral data center options. And as governments look to future-proof their operations and keep pace with the ever-changing digital world, more agencies are leveraging networking and interconnection capabilities that can dynamically deliver services from multiple clouds or networks around the country. Having effective security across these clouds will be critical in enabling agency success.

The federal government will make more than $42 billion available for broadband expansion through the IIJA. But these dollars will be disbursed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) — a funding source that’s unfamiliar to many DOTs — and the grants also require DOTs to forge new partnerships with state and local agencies, telecom providers and commercial ISPs. This session will explore the potential opportunity for DOTs and what they’ll need to do to benefit from these funds.
