The Department of Defense is exploring a Zero Trust security model that leverages commercial technologies. As part of that pilot project, the Defense Information Systems Agency will develop a Secure Access Service Edge solution for DoD workloads – both in the cloud and at on-premises data centers. The potential extends far beyond DoD. State and local governments can leverage its SASE model to defend against malware and ransomware, to deploy cloud-based security to specific populations, and to provide efficient access to a variety of users. In a July 2022 Center for Digital Government survey of state and local government IT leaders, an overwhelming 94% of respondents said they are experiencing challenges in recruiting qualified technologists to fill open positions, particularly in cybersecurity and data analytics roles. More than one-third of survey respondents noted vacancy rates of 10% to 20%.

Mid-sized local governments see security as their top priority for modernizing their infrastructure in the next one to two years, and disaster recovery (DR) is one of their biggest drivers for moving to the cloud. These are just a few takeaways from a recent Center for Digital Government survey looking at how local government leaders are moving forward with modernization and the challenges they face.
