County commission approves $1.8 million in community development projects

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners today allocated an estimated $1.798 million in federal funds into local projects that will help fight poverty and improve the quality of life for thousands of Johnson County residents. County Commissioners approved the proposed draft of the 2017 Action Plan for Housing and Community Development. Each year Johnson County’s Community Development office works with non-profits, faith-based organizations, county agencies and 16 cities that apply for pass-through federal funding to be used for a wide range of improvements in local communities. These community development projects include housing rehabilitation, sidewalk and sewer improvements, and public services like emergency assistance and child care programs. The action plan spells out how local entities will use $1 million from a Community Development Block Grant and $798,000 from HOME program funding.
