It can be hard to go anywhere without cell phones. But looking down at them while driving can be dangerous, even deadly. That's why the Denton City Council is set to vote Tuesday night on whether to require drivers to go completely hands-free behind the wheel.

State and municipal governments in the U.S., many still burdened by legacy systems and processes, are working with service providers to secure new cloud-based IT architectures amid major technology transitions, according to a new research report published today by Information Services Group (ISG) (Nasdaq: III), a leading global technology research and advisory firm. The 2022 ISG Provider Lens™ Cybersecurity — Solutions and Services report for the U.S. Public Sector finds that governments and associated public organizations know they need to quickly overhaul both IT and cybersecurity to meet growing demand for remote work and online services to constituents. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified challenges governments in the U.S. have faced for decades, the report says. Lockdowns and work-from-home requirements forced agencies to offer more services online while ramping up IT support for suddenly remote workers. At the same time, a long-term exodus of older employees accelerated, making it even harder for organizations to catch up. These factors have triggered a wave of IT modernization in the U.S. public sector, including projects to update IT security systems, especially identity and access management (IAM) and data loss/leakage prevention (DLP), ISG says. Aleut to Help Aggregate Actionable Intelligence for Government Agencies

Aleut Information Technology, LLC (Aleut) was awarded a contract by the U.S. Air Force to provide maintenance, development, and support service for its existing Open Architecture Distributed Common Ground System (OA/DCGS) and Forward Processing Exploitation and Dissemination (FPED) platform – the United States' primary visual data aggregator for military intelligence. "We want to help analysts provide better output to their agencies, We know how critical it is that information be processed and distributed efficiently and accurately. Aleut will continue to generate software updates at a quick cadence, adding capabilities that improve the functionality of the platform, and empower operators." -Aleut Federal's Vice President of Technology Services, Geoff Vaughan. FPED is a platform which takes a broad range of data including video, geospatial intelligence, photographs, and more, collected by aircraft in the field and exploits the data using subject matter experts located across the globe. Those experts then take the imagery and identify items of interest (e.g., weapons, vehicles, and troops). The annotated files are then disseminated to subsystems operated by external government agencies such as the Army, Navy and Marine Corps, who use it to generate intelligence reports on the status of the regions. Under the newly awarded contract, Aleut will continue to support various sites within the FPED network to perform software and hardware updates and training, working with operators to learn what features and functionality options they'd like to see in future updates. Aleut uses human centered design principles to research requirements and make User Experience (UX) improvement recommendations for government approval. This contract has a potential duration of three years – including one, one-year base period and two, one-year options. Aleut will partner with the incumbent, MetroStar. U.S. Government Agencies’ IT Networks May Be Unprepared for Return to Office

More than half the federal government IT employees responding to a recent survey say they are worried their IT systems will struggle to deliver good user experiences as more agency employees return to working in offices instead of remotely, according to a new survey released today by Riverbed® and Swish. Among survey respondents who are concerned with end-user experience in a hybrid work environment, 52% of those are concerned that their legacy IT architectures and on-premises network infrastructure will struggle with the increased usage of collaboration tools such as Teams and Zoom as workers return to the office, and 44% are concerned that the end user experience on-site won’t be as good as at home. These concerns arise as the concept of “government from anywhere,” whether in an on-site or hybrid capacity, is becoming widely accepted. Of those surveyed, 47% expect hybrid work environments (teleworking 2-4 days a week) to continue for the long-term, while only 30% expect that a majority of employees will return to the office fulltime in the next six months. The survey of IT employees across the U.S. federal government, from both civilian and defense agencies, was conducted by research firm Market Connections. Survey respondents also reported that they rely on reactive, manual methods to quantify problems with user, infrastructure, and application experiences. While 100 percent of respondents agree that it is at least somewhat important to measure end user experience and productivity capability, 87% claim their agency is still reactively responding to help desk tickets and 51% rely upon user phone calls as a primary means of quantifying issues. “These survey findings point to the importance of utilizing proactive monitoring tools that provide complete network visibility to improve the user experience and network performance across an agency’s entire IT environment, As agencies balance their various work environments and collaboration tools, they should seek to implement an observability platform that multiple teams can use to proactively identify and contextually analyze user issues and leverage automation to solve them quickly.” -Craig McCullough, Senior Vice President of Public Sector for Riverbed.
