Phoenix’s Fleet is Recognized as a Top 10 Government Green Fleet Awards Recipient

Phoenix's use of alternative fuels; processes to reduce petroleum fuel consumption and toxic emissions; as well as its policy for purchasing fuel-efficient vehicles are just some of the characteristics that make the city a recognized leader in the acquisition and management of sustainable and environmental-friendly fleet.   "By making a strong commitment to become one of the most sustainable and climate-resilient cities in the nation, Phoenix is now home to one of the largest fleets of municipal alternative-fuel vehicles in the country," said Mayor Greg Stanton. "This type of recognition for the leadership and innovation Phoenix has shown on sustainability just inspires us to keep doing more." The Government Green Fleet Award is open to all federal, state and local government fleets. Fleets are evaluated using a set of criteria that focus on several categories, including policies and planning strategies, as well as executive and employee involvement in setting yearly goals for fuel efficiency and emissions standards. Phoenix Public Works -- the department that oversees the procurement and maintenance of large, diverse vehicles for the Police, Water Services, Streets Transportation, Parks and Recreation departments, as well as its own solid waste collection vehicles — has drafted a Sustainable Fleet Strategy with a goal of reducing vehicle emissions by acquiring or leasing vehicles that use alternative fuels and/or vehicles that have the SmartWay Certification from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This vehicle certification ensures the vehicles purchased achieve the lowest emission levels in their class.
