State study of race and traffic stops singles out 25 cops

HARTFORD, Conn. – A new Connecticut government report singles out 25 police officers statewide for stopping minority drivers at higher rates than their peers. The analysis by Central Connecticut State University doesn't identify the 25 officers and says the results are not conclusive of wrongdoing. Its authors call it the most comprehensive examination of police traffic stop data among the more than two dozen states that collect such information. Police officials call the report flawed and deny officers have racially profiled drivers. The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut says the analysis confirms some biases. Statewide, black drivers were involved in about 14 percent of all traffic stops from October 2014 to September 2015, compared with 9 percent of state residents who are black and of driving age.
