Webber St. - Code Compliance Issue - City Manager's Response

Code Compliance Case: City Manager Tom Barwin spoke with members of the media today regarding the code compliance case on Webber Street.  The house was abandoned for 6 years, which prompted complaints from a neighbor about the deteriorating structure, unkempt yard and a possible squatter. The owner moved back into the house within the past few months. This has been an ongoing case for 2 years. The City has met with the owner over 2 dozen times, extended multiple offers of help --- which were declined. The City even spoke with her daughter in California about the matter, who indicated her mother is independent. Please watch this media availability in its entirety to gain a more clear, comprehensive understanding of the issue. The City of Sarasota has no interest in taking anyone's home. And, we are in the process of setting up a meeting with the owner, once again, to resolve outstanding issues in a fair and compassionate manner.
