HOW THEY VOTED: MOST NY REPS SUPPORT BILL TO AVOID SHUTDOWN, FUND BORDER BARRIERS
With bipartisan support, Congress on Thursday passed a spending bill to fund several federal government agencies through Sept. 30 and provide nearly $1.4 billion for new barriers along the southern border. President Donald Trump indicated that he would sign the measure. However, he also plans to declare a national emergency and redirect billions of defense funds for the construction of a border wall. The Senate passed the bipartisan agreement, which was negotiated by appropriators from both houses, by an 83 to 16 vote. New York's senators split on the vote, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer supporting the legislation and U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democratic presidential candidate, voting against it.
