Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

In 2016, the Australian Government instructed the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to begin production of a Foreign Policy White Paper. It is to be the first such White Paper issued since 2013. Recognising that Australia’s external environment has changed significantly in the last 13 years, the Foreign Policy White Paper sought to provide a roadmap for advancing Australia’s international interests in the years ahead. Public consultations for the White Paper were conducted between November 2016 and February 2017. A call for written submissions was issued by DFAT’s Foreign Policy White Paper Taskforce, alongside roundtable discussions with policy experts hosted in each state and territory capital.
