Government beyond Brexit The State of the State 2018-19

May 23, 2018

This year’s report comes a decade after the global financial crisis and amid the UK’s complex departure from the EU. That process is taking place under intense press scrutiny, fuelled by passionate politics and debated relentlessly across social media, with an inevitable consequence that the depth of other policy development may not be as profound as it needs to be. This report casts a spotlight on the broader challenges – both related to Brexit and not – that affect the quality of our public services, the fairness of our society, the security of our citizens and the prosperity of our country

The underlying driver of the ongoing US–China trade war is a race for global technological dominance. President Trump has raised a number of issues regarding trade with China – including the US’s trade deficit with China and the naming of China as a currency manipulator. But at the heart of the ongoing tariff escalation are China’s policies and practices regarding forced technology transfer, intellectual property theft and non-market distortions.

Delivering on Digital Government: Achieving the Promise of Artificial Intelligence

whitePaper | December 12, 2019

Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere — or so it seems. From navigation apps that automatically reroute us when our usual highway is clogged with traffic to banking websites that pre-approve mortgages seconds after we submit a short application, AI is expanding into our personal and professional lives more every day. Eyeing this trend, state CIOs understand AI is also likely to play an important role in modernizing the delivery of citizen services and furthering government modernization efforts. Security Clearances for Contractors and Government Employees

whitePaper | January 29, 2020

Individual government contractors face more rigorous scrutiny, as private companies can monitor employee’s social media as part of their continuous vetting and insider threat protocols. However, despite the existence of a directive permitting them to do so, government agencies do not monitor their employees’ social media. Our interviews found this is due to a lack of clear guidance on how to implement the existing directives and security policies. This shortcoming can be remedied by government agencies agreeing upon a single common standard regarding the use of publicly available electronic information, specifically social media, for personnel security and insider threat purposes. The DNI, as Security Executive Agent for the government, must then develop guidelines for the implementation of this standard throughout the sector.

Forty years ago, on January 1, 1979, the United States and the People’s Republic of China established diplomatic relations. And thirty years ago, on June 4, 1989, the leadership of the CCP, having declared martial law, sent troops to violently extinguish a peaceful protest, resulting in the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Compliance with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Publication 1075

whitePaper | June 26, 2022

The United States Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) goal is to promote taxpayer confidence in the integrity of the tax system by ensuring confidentiality of the tax information provided to the federal, state and local agencies. The IRS 1075 publication provides guidance to agencies, agents, contractors and subcontractors on implementing adequate policies, processes, controls and safeguards to protect Federal tax information (FTI). The IRS 1075 requirements follow the FedRAMP and NIST 800-53 Rev.5 guidelines. Agencies that receive FTI must ensure that they have adequate programs in place to protect the data received in line with IRS 1075 guidelines. VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US) has been authorized against the FedRAMP High baseline controls and therefore can support agencies in meeting the IRS 1075 requirements.

Shift Left API Security Testing for Government Agencies

whitePaper | September 7, 2022

Application programming interfaces, or APIs, enable government agencies to seamlessly share data across federal, state, and local levels. They are quite frankly the glue that allows agencies to deliver services to mission partners, civilians, and even disabled veterans. Similar to how retailers create personalized experiences by integrating location, inventory, and payment data, government agencies also create contextual experiences for constituents and personnel by leveraging APIs. The impact of APIs can be seen across all major sectors of government, including traffic and transportation management, utilities, healthcare, social services, agriculture, as well as law enforcement. With the seamless connection between datasets and agencies, government personnel are able to innovate faster and drive speed to mission. How exactly? APIs reduce the workload and redundant operations performed by developers by allowing them to access data stored elsewhere. This enables them to quickly execute on tasks and take on more important projects of greater impact.
