Tackling Tuberculosis Local government’s public health role

These FAQs on tuberculosis (TB) have been produced by the Local Government Association (LGA) and Public Health England (PHE) to address questions that councillors and officers in local government may have on TB and its burden in the UK. Responsibility for public health transferred from the NHS to local authorities in April 2013 under the wider shakeup of the health service. Local councils have a critical role in protecting the health of their population. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by bacteria belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. TB usually affects the lungs, but can affect other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes (glands), the bones and the brain. Infection with the TB organism may not develop into TB disease. The vast majority of TB is curable with a combination of specific antibiotics, treated for at least six months.

In a recent survey conducted on behalf of SolarWinds, public sector respondents reported increased concern over ransomware, malware and phishing the most over the previous year, but time to detection and resolution had not improved for the majority.1 To bolster application security, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued a memorandum directing agencies to identify critical software and implement the latest protections outlined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Another OMB memorandum presented a federal zero trust architecture (ZTA) strategy that requires agencies to meet specific cybersecurity standards and objectives by the end of FY2024.

Creating More Responsive Government Organizations

whitePaper | April 13, 2020

Like many state governments, South Dakota has a large workforce. Managing payroll and benefits for 18,000 current employees and retirees is no easy task, and paper-based processes made it more complex and inefficient. South Dakota needed to move away from manual processes where employees submitted paper forms to HR personnel, who then re-entered the information into a database. State leaders wanted to transition to self-service tools that let employees do things like change their direct deposit information, update their tax withholding and provide a new address — all in just a few clicks.
